Dragon's Maze Pre -Release - Magic The Gathering

This is my journey through the maze.

Two headed giant Format

This will be my first official pre-release i have been to. So i am looking forward to getting my hands on the new shiny cards for Dragon's maze. The format will be two headed giant so that it will be two players versus two players with a combined health points of thirty. The game will only be one game instead of the usual best of three due to the increased number of players and increased health points involved.
There are also several acheivements to win extra boosters throughout the day.

Achievements:

Azorious : Have five enchantments in play
Boros: Have ten creatures on the battlefield
Dimir: Mill out a player
Golgari: Have twenty cards in your graveyard
Gruul: One player has ten land in play
Izzet: Play five sorcery  or instants cards in a turn
Orzhov: Kill a guild leader or guild champion.
Rakdos: Deal thirty plus damage in a single turn.
Selesnya: Have life total of fifty plus.
Simic: Get a creature to 15/15

The event started at eleven in the morning with the players getting their guild pack and a super secret guild that shares a colour with your chosen guild, i decided my chosen guild would be Dimir, they have a lot of unblockable creatures and a good few spells that make creatures unblockable, they also have some cards that let you produce horror tokens (1/1 blue black  tokens with flying, don't underestimate them) . That was kind of my game-plan, unblockable creatures and flying tokens. The super-secret guild i was given was Golgari, which was handy as my fellow team mate was playing Golgari as her main guild choice, her secret guild was Gruul. By about half twelve everyone had their decks built and were eager to begin their games.

Decks

Dimir
Land:
4x Island
6x Swamp
3x Forest
Dimir guildgate
Golgari guildgate

Creatures:
Undercity enforcer
balustrade spy
Dreg mangler
Deathcult rogue
Wind drake
Gatecreeper vine
Trestle troll
Metropolis sprite
Daggerdrome imp
Shadow alley denizen
Ubul sar gatekeepers

Instants, Sorceries and Artifacts:
Far- away
Dimir charm
Fatal fumes
Psychic strike
Midnight recovery
Stolen identity
Crypt incursion
Grisly spectacle
Shadow slice
Aetherize
Phytoburst
Mending touch
Hidden strings

40 cards
The boosters i got didn't really have the cards i was hoping for having only one unblockable creature and the spells i got for Dimir were mainly mill spells  but not enough of them to make the deck overly effective.  so i started to rely on my Golgari creatures in my deck instead for the punch i needed.

Golgari

Land:
6x Swamp
8x Forest
Golgari guildgate

Creatures:
Slitherhead
Maze behemoth
Trestle troll
Daggerdrome imp
Jarad, Golgari Lich lord
Disciple of the old ways
Skarrg Goliath
Thrashing mossdog
Sewer shambler
2x Karozda gorgon
2x Maze abomination
Kraul warior

Instants, Sorceries and Artifacts:
Drown in filth
Giant growth
2x Crypt incursion
Grisly salvage
Pit fight
Aerial predation
Chorus of might
Seek the horizon
Predators rampage
Stab wound

40 cards

Time to Run the Maze

Game One

Against an Izzet and Selesnya alliance.
The game started off as fairly defensively play on our part, having to rely on cards such as Hidden strings to keep the attacking creatures at bay.

The planeswalker  Ral Zarek came into play quite early in the game. Using his +1 ability to tap/untap creature and causing our team to have its defence wide open for a harsh hit from their attacking creatures. along with creatures like Haazda snare squad tapping more of your creatures, leaving us on dangerously low life points

Tapping like crazy!

We recovered some life points back by plying crypt incursion giving us a small help , but the respite was short lived and Ral Zarek used his -2 ability twice over the turns taking out our last remaining health points, ending the game. A loss.

During this Game we all got our Promo Maze's end card for taking part.

Game Two
Against a Gruul  - Simic collaboration.

The game started off with our side with in a delicate control with a combo of Black alley denizen and undercity informer. until the Gruul player played a  Scorchwalker, a 5/1 red creature and enchanted it to make it more powerful. We played a combo of Stolen identity and Pit fight to overcome the brutish creature, Jarad, Golgari lich lord came into play only to get turned in to a frog lizard by Rapid hybridization.

The Planes walker Ral Zarek made another appearance (He seems to hate the Dime/Golgari guild). Ending the game with his -2 ability again.

Dimir/Golgari  -0
Ral Zarek - 2

Game Three

Against a Boros - Orzhov Pact.

This game was a real grind  of a game with lots of life points exchanging due to extorting and Stab wound. The Izzet player managing to keep his Blistercoil weird in play for most of the game.
We managed to get the Simic achievement by getting Jarad up to a 19/19 using Scavenge and Bloodrushing. We both received a booster pack of Dragon's maze.

Maze Behemoth gave the Izzet-Orzhov pact issues as it gave the multicoloured creatures trample.

One of the crucial moments was when i countered the  Izzet player playing the Molten Primordial with Psychic strike.

After the slog it was the Dimir Golgari that came off worst and notched another loss.

Game Four,

Well there wasn't really a game four, due to our poor performance we picked up the bye.

So we took this opportunity to go grab a bite to eat and discuss strategy.  But mostly we ate food.

Game Five,

The last game of the pre-release was against a Boros -Gruul union.
the Game started with or team gaining lots of life, at one point up to forty nine life. This was mainly down to both of us playing a Daggerdrome imp

Lifesaver

\
My team mate got slightly mana starved and i had to resort to anti attack tactics and Aetherize was one of them, just to give us a few more turns to get the mana we needed.

All three of these cards were played during this game to build up our life points.

Aurelia, the Warleader ended our hope of a single win when she came into play, then bloodrushed and smashed us apart (their side did a total attack of fifty two life damage) and won the game for the Boros -Gruul Union..

It should not be a surprise to anyone to know that we landed in last place of seventeen teams. The day was a lot of fun and it was good to see the new set (and get kicked about by a planeswalker) One of the cards i picked up was the Selesnya guild champion Emmara Tandris. Who went straight into my Selesnya deck.

I was very happy at how the event was handled
and the two headed giant created a nice
fresh challenge to the game. I will definitely be
taking part in future Magic the gathering events.

Ekam: No Longer Restricted To Building Self, And Can Be Taught New Rules

Two big updates to Ekam this weekend! As always, the source code is at:

http://code.google.com/p/ekam/

Updates

Arbitrary Code

Ekam is no longer restricted to only building code in the "ekam" namespace. It will now build pretty much any C++ code you throw at it, so long as the code depends only on the standard C/C++ library. In fact, when I pointed Ekam at the Protocol Buffers source code, it successfully churned out protoc! (It didn't do as well compiling the tests, though.)

I ended up accomplishing this not by indexing libraries, as I had planned, but instead by changing the behavior when a dependency is not found. Now, if the link action cannot find any object files defining a particular symbol, it just goes ahead and tries to link anyway to see what happens. Only after failing does it decide to wait for the symbols to become available -- and it retries again every time a symbol for which it was waiting shows up. So, once all non-libc symbols are available, the link succeeds.

Now, this has the down side that Ekam will go through a lot of failed linker invocations. But, I look at this as an optimization problem, not a correctness problem. We can use heuristics to make Ekam avoid too many redundant link attempts. For example, we can remember what happened last time. Or, an easier approach would be to just make sure failed operations are not tried again until everything else is done.

Related to this change, Ekam will now re-run even a successful operation if dependencies that were not originally available become available. I talked about why you'd want to do this last week.

Defining new rules

You can now implement new build rules by simply writing a shell script and putting it in the source tree, as I proposed last week. You can now see what the actual code for compiling C++ looks like (linking is not yet implemented as a script). Of course, you don't have to write these as shell scripts. Any executable whose name ends in .ekam-rule will be picked up by Ekam -- even binaries that were themselves compiled by Ekam.

Refactoring

I seem to spend a lot of time refactoring. Working on C++ outside of Google is almost like learning a whole new language. I get to use whatever style I want, including whatever C++ features I want. I've been refining a very specific style, and I keep realizing ways to improve it that require going back and rewriting a bunch of stuff. Some key aspects of the style I'm using:

  • Exceptions are allowed, but expected never to occur in normal usage.
  • Ownership of pointers, and passing of that ownership, is explicit. I have a template class called OwnedPtr for this. In fact, I never use new -- instead, I call OwnedPtr::allocate() (passing it the desired constructor parameters). It's not possible to release ownership of the pointer, except by moving it to another OwnedPtr. Thus, the only way for memory to become unreachable without being deleted is by creating an ownership cycle. Yet, I don't use reference counting, since it is notoriously slow in the presence of multiple cores.
  • I'm using single-threaded event-driven I/O, since Ekam itself is just a dispatcher and does not need to utilize multiple cores. Events need to be cancelable. Originally, I had every asynchronous method optionally return a canceler object which could be called to cancel the operation. This got surprisingly hairy to implement, since the event effectively had to cancel the canceler when complete. Also, events owned their callbacks, which made a lot of things awkward and tended to lead to cyclic ownership (doh). What turned out to be much simpler was to simply have every asynchronous method return an object representing the ongoing operation. To cancel the operation, delete the object. With this approach, deleting a high-level object naturally causes everything it is doing to be canceled via cascading destructors, with no need to really keep track of cancellation.

Ideas

Currently, the compile action does not yet resolve header dependencies -- if you need to use special include directories you must specify CXXFLAGS manually. This is, of course, bad. But how can Ekam detect header dependencies?

One approach would be to attempt to compile and, if not successful, try to parse the error messages to determine missing includes. This is, of course, going to be pretty brittle -- it would need to understand every compiler's output, possibly for every locale.

Another approach would be to write some sort of an "include scanner" which looks for #include directives. It would not necessarily have to evaluate branches (#ifdefs and such), since it could just conservatively look for all the headers that are mentioned and take whatever it can find. However, this would still be pretty complicated to write and slow to run, and it wouldn't be able to handle things like macro-derived header names (yes, you can do that).

So here's my idea: Run the compiler, but use LD_PRELOAD to inject into it a custom implementation of open(). This implementation will basically send an RPC to Ekam (using the already-implement plugin interface) asking where to find the file, then replace the path with what Ekam sends back. The injected open() could pay attention only to paths in a certain directory which would be added to the compiler's include path. Problem solved! And better yet, this solution naturally extends to other kinds of actions and programming languages.

Life Lessons From PUBG

PUBG. The first thing that comes in mind after listening to it is a battle-royale game. But PUBG has some connection to real life. We can learn many things from PUBG. PUBG can motivate us a lot. Below given are 20 life lessons that we can learn from PUBG:

pubg motivation
Motivation from PUBG

1. The blue zone is just an illusion. Life never gives a second chance. If anyone goes away from this world, then the person never returns.

We know that once we are killed, we cannot return to the game. Though how much rich we are, we should accept that we are dead and no one in this world can save us.

2. Nothing is yours in this world. After your death, the scopes, weapons, clothes etc. that you collected in your life will remain here.

What is the meaning of life if we don't enjoy it? There are more things to do in life than just running after something!

3Never underestimate your enemies. You can never know who can kill you, at what time and where.

So don't underestimate your enemies and prepare to beat them before they beat you.

4. The more resources we have, the more we survive.

Start collecting resources and information about your enemies The more you collect, the more chances arrive that you beat them.

5. Sometimes you need others to revive yourself. So kill your ego and make your relationship stronger.

Often people break their relations just to satisfy their ego. But relationships are far more important than our ego. Ego will make us alone in this social world.

6. It doesn't matter how strong you are. If you are not individually strong, you can lose any time.

Teamwork is good but there will a  time when you have to fight alone. At that time if you are not individually strong, you won't live long.

7. You can never know when, how and where you can be attacked, so always be alert.

You should be alert at all times. Enemies can attack at any moment and from anywhere. A little mistake can risk your life.

8. You have to either win or lose in your life, there is no option to run away.

You have to either kill the enemy or get killed. There is no option to run away. Running away proves that you are no more than a loser.

9. Never leave your task undone or half-completed.

Found your enemy? Just kill him or else he will kill you. Don't just let him go or he will be the cause of your death.

10. You have to kill your enemies as soon as you see them otherwise they will kill you.

Found your enemy? Just kill him or else he will kill you. Don't just let him go or he will be the cause of your death.

11. Act or react whenever you get a chance.

Count your actions. Act when your team needs your help. React when you find an enemy.

12. Always take calculated risks, never aim blindly.

Take risks but don't just shoot blindly. If there is no reward for taking risks you better move away. Also, the reward should be worth the risks that you take.

13. Being in a shelter for some time will save you from enemies but to save yourself from the zone you have to get out of your comfort zone.

Collect your weapons and equipment and just continue fighting, killing all enemies in your way. Come out of your comfort zone and achieve everything.

14. Always try to be away from negative energy otherwise they will attack and kill you.

Negative people will spread negativity everywhere. It is your duty to keep a distance from them. Be positive no matter what happens.

15. We should help our friends whenever they need help.

It is also our duty to help our friends whenever they need us because if they have saved us it's our duty to pay them.

16. Never let your enemies know your position or plans.

Don't let your enemies know your future plans. Implement them secretly and let your success make the noise.

17. No work is completed with frustration, so try to remain cool and make quick decisions.

Frustration and being angry is one of the reasons that you fail successively. Try to be calm and prove them wrong when you get the next chance.

18. In the last, the guy who is smartest, powerful and brave will win the chicken dinner.

The guy who thinks smartly does proper plans and implements them correctly gets to taste the chicken dinner.

19. There is always one winner.

You have to become that winner in order to taste chicken dinner. You have to defeat them all and become first.

20. Never depend on someone in your life. Follow your passion and show your talent to everyone in this world.

Never depend on your friends/ family. Be independent, be strong, be unique and the world is yours.

So next time you play the game, think about it and motivate yourself. PUBG is not only a game but a motivational tool. Learn these life lessons from PUBG.

What motivation have you learned from PUBG? Comment us below as we are very curious to know it.

Taking A Tour Of Trolls!

What is a Tour of Trolls? Simply put, I'm going to play every single caster in Trolls with a list that I think suits them well and document the experience.

I'm currently a Trollbloods player in MK3 Warmachine & Hordes. I've played the faction since MK2 and it's what I've decided to dedicate my time to now that MK3 has really hit its stride.  I love the kind of grinding attrition style games that Trolls want to play and I like the in-game mechanics of how you start with mediocre stats that can be buffed up to amazing heights when played correctly.

If you know anything about WMHD MK3, you know that after the freak accident of play testing known as Madrak2 was fixed, Trolls had a pretty bad place in the meta for the game.

Privateer has since fixed this by putting the faction through their Community Integrated Development (CID) process.

I've played Trolls pre-CID, and while CID was hitting I was effectively forced out of playing table top games for a while to take care of my wife through the end of the pregnancy with and the subsequent delivery of our second daughter.

Now that things have settled down, I've started to get games in again and I really want to explore the faction. Things really do feel new and shiny due to the re-balancing of old models, the new themes, and the new Northkin releases we just got.

Trolls feel completely wide open as a faction in terms of what lists and casters are viable for use. I actually think that even the "worst" casters in Trolls actually have a good amount of game and can have lists built around them that make them a solid choice for a list pairing.

So I'm basically going to play every single caster in the faction and document how it goes in detail.

Some casters may need to wait a month or two before I get to them since I think they want a Hooch Hauler to really shine, and that won't be in my hands till at least February.
