https://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?mini=true&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FStswithuns.org.uk%2Fphotos%2Fa.1936728586540185%2F2358434734369566%2F%3Ftype%3D3&title=CHRISTIAN%20MORNING%20MEDITATION%3ALectio%20Divina%3A%20Matthew%2013%3A1-9Wednesday%2C%20July%2024%2C%202019Ordinary%20Time1%29%20Opening%20prayerLord%2Cbe%20merciful%20to%20Your%20people.Fill%20us%20with%20Your%20giftsand%20make%20us%20always%20eager%20to%20serve%20Youin%20faith%2C%20hope%20and%20love.You%20live%20and%20reign%20with%20the%20Father%20and%20the%20Holy%20Spirit%2Cone%20God%2C%20for%20ever%20and%20ever.%20Amen.2%29%20Gospel%20Reading%20%E2%80%93%20Matthew%2013%3A1-9On%20that%20day%2C%20Jesus%20went%20out%20of%20the%20house%20and%20sat%20down%20by%20the%20sea.%20Such%20large%20crowds%20gathered%20around%20him%20that%20he%20got%20into%20a%20boat%20and%20sat%20down%2C%20and%20the%20whole%20crowd%20stood%20along%20the%20shore.%20And%20he%20spoke%20to%20them%20at%20length%20in%20parables%2C%20saying%3A%20%26quot%3BA%20sower%20went%20out%20to%20sow.%20And%20as%20he%20sowed%2C%20some%20seed%20fell%20on%20the%20path%2C%20and%20birds%20came%20and%20ate%20it%20up.%20Some%20fell%20on%20rocky%20ground%2C%20where%20it%20had%20little%20soil.%20It%20sprang%20up%20at%20once%20because%20the%20soil%20was%20not%20deep%2C%20and%20when%20the%20sun%20rose%20it%20was%20scorched%2C%20and%20it%20withered%20for%20lack%20of%20roots.%20Some%20seed%20fell%20among%20thorns%2C%20and%20the%20thorns%20grew%20up%20and%20choked%20it.%20But%20some%20seed%20fell%20on%20rich%20soil%2C%20and%20produced%20fruit%2C%20a%20hundred%20or%20sixty%20or%20thirtyfold.%20Whoever%20has%20ears%20ought%20to%20hear.%26quot%3B3%29%20Reflection%E2%80%A2%20In%20chapter%2013%20of%20the%20Gospel%20of%20Matthew%20the%20third%20great%20discourse%20begins%2C%20the%20Discourse%20of%20the%20Parables.%20As%20we%20already%20said%20before%2C%20in%20the%20commentary%20on%20the%20Gospel%20of%20July%209th%2C%20Matthew%20organized%20his%20Gospel%20like%20a%20new%20edition%20of%20the%20Law%20of%20God%20or%20like%20a%20new%20%E2%80%9CPentateuch%E2%80%9D%20with%20its%20five%20books.%20For%20this%20reason%20his%20Gospel%20is%20composed%20of%20five%20great%20discourses%20or%20teachings%20of%20Jesus%2C%20followed%20by%20narrative%20parts%2C%20in%20which%20he%20describes%20how%20Jesus%20put%20into%20practice%20what%20He%20had%20taught%20in%20the%20discourses.%20The%20following%20is%20the%20outline%3AIntroduction%3A%20birth%20and%20preparation%20of%20the%20Messiah%20%28Mt%201%20to%204%29a%29%20Sermon%20on%20the%20Mount%3A%20the%20entrance%20door%20to%20the%20Kingdom%20%28Mt%205%20to%207%29Narrative%20Mt%208%20and%209b%29%20Discourse%20on%20the%20Mission%3A%20how%20to%20announce%20and%20spread%20the%20Kingdom%20%28Mt%2010%29Narrative%20Mt%2011%20and%2012c%29%20Discourse%20of%20the%20Parables%3A%20the%20mystery%20of%20the%20Kingdom%20present%20in%20life%20%28Mt%2013%29Narrative%20Mt%2014%20to%2017d%29%20Discourse%20on%20the%20Community%3A%20the%20new%20way%20of%20living%20together%20in%20the%20Kingdom%20%28Mt%2018%29Narrative%2019%20to%2023e%29%20Discourse%20on%20the%20future%20coming%20of%20the%20Kingdom%3A%20the%20utopia%20which%20sustains%20hope%20%28Mt%2024%20and%2025%29Conclusion%3A%20Passion%2C%20Death%20and%20Resurrection%20%28Mt%2026%20to%2028%29.%E2%80%A2%20In%20today%E2%80%99s%20Gospel%20we%20will%20meditate%20on%20the%20parable%20of%20the%20seed.%20Jesus%20had%20a%20way%20of%20speaking%20by%20means%20of%20comparisons%20and%20parables.%20Generally%2C%20when%20He%20finished%20telling%20a%20parable%2C%20He%20did%20not%20explain%20it%2C%20but%20used%20to%20say%2C%20%E2%80%9CHe%20who%20has%20ears%20to%20hear%2C%20let%20him%20hear%21%E2%80%9D%20%28Mt%2011%3A15%3B%2013%3A9%2C43%29.%20Sometimes%20He%20would%20explain%20the%20meaning%20to%20the%20disciples%20%28Mt%2013%3A36%29.%20The%20parables%20speak%20of%20the%20things%20of%20life%3B%20seed%2C%20lamp%2C%20mustard%20seed%2C%20salt%2C%20etc.%20These%20are%20things%20that%20exist%20in%20daily%20life%2C%20for%20the%20people%20of%20that%20time%20as%20well%20as%20today%20for%20us.%20Thus%2C%20the%20experience%20that%20we%20have%20today%20of%20these%20things%20becomes%20for%20us%20a%20means%20to%20discover%20the%20presence%20of%20the%20mystery%20of%20God%20in%20our%20life.%20To%20speak%20in%20parables%20means%20to%20reveal%20the%20mystery%20of%20the%20Kingdom%20present%20in%20life.%E2%80%A2%20Matthew%2013%3A1-3%3A%20Sitting%20in%20the%20boat%2C%20Jesus%20taught%20the%20people.%20As%20it%20happened%20in%20the%20Sermon%20on%20the%20Mount%20%28Mt%205%3A1-2%29%2C%20here%20also%2C%20Matthew%20makes%20a%20brief%20introduction%20to%20The%20Discourse%20of%20the%20Parables%2C%20describing%20Jesus%20who%20teaches%20in%20the%20boat%2C%20on%20the%20shore%2C%20and%20the%20many%20people%20around%20Him%20who%20listen.%20Jesus%20was%20not%20a%20person%20who%20was%20instructed%20%28Jn%207%3A15%29.%20He%20had%20not%20been%20to%20a%20higher%20school%20in%20Jerusalem.%20He%20came%20from%20inside%20the%20country%2C%20from%20Nazareth.%20He%20was%20unknown%2C%20a%20craftsman%20or%20artisan.%20Without%20asking%20permission%20from%20the%20religious%20authority%2C%20He%20began%20to%20teach%20the%20people.%20People%20liked%20to%20listen%20to%20Him.%20Jesus%20taught%20especially%20by%20means%20of%20parables.%20We%20have%20already%20heard%20some%20of%20them%3A%20fishers%20of%20men%20%28Mt%204%3A19%29%2C%20the%20salt%20%28Mt%205%3A13%29%2C%20the%20lamp%20%28Mt%205%3A15%29%2C%20the%20birds%20of%20the%20sky%20and%20the%20lilies%20of%20the%20field%20%28Mt%206%3A26.28%29%2C%20the%20house%20constructed%20on%20the%20rock%20%28Mt%207%3A24%29%2C%20and%20now%2C%20in%20chapter%2013%2C%20the%20parables%20begin%20to%20have%20a%20particular%20meaning%3A%20they%20serve%20to%20reveal%20the%20mystery%20of%20the%20Kingdom%20of%20God%20present%20in%20the%20midst%20of%20people%20and%20the%20activity%20of%20Jesus.%E2%80%A2%20Matthew%2013%3A4-8%3A%20The%20parable%20of%20the%20seed%20taken%20from%20the%20life%20of%20the%20farmer.%20At%20that%20time%2C%20it%20was%20not%20easy%20to%20live%20from%20farming.%20The%20land%20was%20full%20of%20stones.%20There%20was%20little%20rain%20and%20too%20much%20sun.%20Many%20times%2C%20in%20order%20to%20shortcut%20the%20way%2C%20people%20%20passed%20through%20the%20fields%20and%20destroyed%20the%20plants%20%28Mt%2012%3A1%29.%20%20In%20spite%20of%20all%20that%2C%20every%20year%2C%20the%20farmer%20would%20sow%20and%20plant%2C%20with%20trust%20in%20the%20force%20of%20the%20seed%2C%20in%20the%20generosity%20of%20nature.%20The%20parable%20of%20the%20sower%20describes%20that%20which%20we%20all%20know%20and%20do%3A%20the%20seed%20thrown%20by%20the%20planter%20falls%20on%20the%20ground%20along%20the%20road%2C%20another%20part%20falls%20among%20the%20stones%20and%20thistles%3B%20still%20another%20part%20falls%20on%20good%20earth%2C%20where%2C%20according%20to%20the%20quality%20of%20the%20land%2C%20will%20produce%20thirty%2C%20sixty%20and%20even%20up%20to%20one%20hundredfold.%20A%20parable%20is%20a%20comparison.%20It%20uses%20things%20known%20by%20the%20people%20and%20which%20are%20visible%20to%20explain%20that%20the%20Kingdom%20of%20God%20is%20an%20invisible%20and%20unknown%20thing.%20The%20people%20of%20Galilee%20understood%20about%20seeds%2C%20ground%2C%20rain%2C%20sun%20and%20harvest.%20So%20now%20Jesus%20uses%20exactly%20these%20things%20that%20were%20known%20to%20people%20to%20explain%20the%20mystery%20of%20the%20Kingdom.%E2%80%A2%20Matthew%2013%3A9%3A%20He%20who%20has%20ears%20to%20hear%2C%20let%20him%20listen.%20The%20expression%20%E2%80%9CHe%20who%20has%20ears%2C%20let%20him%20listen%E2%80%9D%20means%3A%20%E2%80%9CIt%20is%20this%21%20You%20have%20heard.%20Now%20try%20to%20understand%21%E2%80%9D%20The%20way%20to%20be%20able%20to%20understand%20the%20parable%20is%20to%20search%3A%20%E2%80%9CTo%20try%20to%20understand%21%E2%80%9D%20The%20parable%20does%20not%20give%20everything%20immediately%2C%20but%20pushes%20one%20to%20think%20and%20to%20make%20one%20discover%2C%20starting%20from%20the%20experience%20which%20the%20listeners%20have%20of%20the%20seed.%20It%20appeals%20to%20creativity%20and%20to%20participation.%20It%20is%20not%20a%20doctrine%20which%20comes%20ready%20to%20be%20taught.%20The%20parable%20does%20not%20give%20water%20in%20bottles%2C%20but%20the%20source.%20The%20farmer%20who%20listens%20to%20the%20parable%20says%2C%20%E2%80%9CSeed%20in%20the%20ground%2C%20I%20know%20what%20that%20means%21%20But%20Jesus%20says%20that%20it%20has%20something%20to%20do%20with%20the%20Kingdom%20of%20God.%20What%20would%20that%20be%3F%E2%80%9D%20And%20it%20is%20easy%20to%20imagine%20the%20long%20conversations%20of%20the%20people%21%20The%20parable%20leads%20us%20to%20listen%20to%20nature%20and%20to%20think%20of%20life.%20Once%20a%20person%20asked%20in%20a%20community%2C%20%E2%80%9CJesus%20says%20that%20we%20have%20to%20be%20salt.%20What%20is%20salt%20good%20for%3F%E2%80%9D%20There%20was%20discussion%2C%20and%20then%20at%20the%20end%2C%20ten%20different%20purposes%20that%20salt%20can%20have%2C%20were%20discovered.%20Then%20all%20this%20was%20applied%20to%20the%20life%20of%20the%20community%20and%20it%20was%20discovered%20that%20to%20be%20salt%20is%20difficult%20and%20demanding.%20The%20parable%20worked%20well%214%29%20Personal%20questions%E2%80%A2%20When%20you%20were%20a%20child%20how%20was%20catechism%20taught%20to%20you%3F%20How%20do%20you%20compare%20it%20to%20%20some%20parts%20of%20your%20life%3F%20Do%20you%20remember%20some%20important%20comparison%20that%20the%20catechist%20told%20you%3F%20How%20is%20the%20catechesis%20today%20in%20your%20community%3F%E2%80%A2%20Sometimes%20we%20are%20the%20road%20side%2C%20sometimes%20the%20rock%3B%20other%20times%20the%20thorns%20or%20thistles%2C%20and%20other%20times%20good%20earth.%20What%20am%20I%3F%20What%20are%20we%20in%20our%20community%3F%20Which%20are%20the%20fruits%20which%20the%20Word%20of%20God%20is%20producing%20in%20my%20life%2C%20in%2
